j.hjort is Portland's best known and most acclaimed techno producer/DJ. After a stint living in Germany with frequent outings to the now famous Dorian Gray Techno Club in Frankfurt in 1991, Hjort fell in love with the pulsing, hypnotic grooves of European techno and began crafting beats of his own. Returning to the USA, Hjort began studying jazz guitar and performed in various bands throughout the 90s. His love for electronica eventually led him to form live house collective Slowing Room with long time collaborator Eric St.Pierre (late night clouds project) while living in Tampa, FL. Slowing Room seamlessly fused live and sequenced instrumentation and was an early proponent of using laptops in a band setting. After five full length albums and hundreds of live performances Slowing Room dissolved in 2004, and Hjort began concentrating wholly on his own productions. St. Pierre and Hjort would eventually re-unite to form the live techno duo secret weekend. j.hjort is the recipient of the Portland Phoenix "Best Music Poll" award for "Best Electronic Act" in 2008 (and was nominated three times prior). He is also the winner of best "Best House Producer" and "Best Techno DJ" in 2007 and "Best Techno Act" in 2008 in the WePushButtons Electronic Music Awards, an online vote based annual awards show celebrating New England based DJs and producers. A j.hjort performance can consist of live PA featuring all original material, a dj set, or a hybrid of the two (which is usually most typical) but is always designed for the dancefloor. Deep tech ambiences, dirty synth grooves, minimalist sensibilities, 4 on the floor structures, and too much gin are hallmarks of an evening with j.hjort. When j.hjort is not busy traveling abroad or inciting dance parties, he is busy designing web sites and running the brick.city.media dance imprint. Started in 2003 to release Portland area electronic music, brick.city.media has seen relative success with it's "Beats on the Rocks" series and j.hjort releases. BCM merged with MIlled Pavement records in 2008 expanding it's distribution reach and roster into Europe and beyond.
